The M1s arrived in South West London under grey skies but in buoyant mood and eager to extend their unbeaten run. Still missing Matt Ramshaw as he continues his rehab from a broken bone in his foot, and Dan West, who picked up a knee injury during the Brighton match which will keep him out for a couple of weeks. New boy Richmond Lum came in to make his league debut.

The match started slowly with both sides finding their feet in what was a tight, close first half. Teddington were first to score when in the fourteenth minute, Southgate failed to clear their circle and Ed Greaves picked up the loose ball beating Sav between the posts.

Southgate equalised in the thirty second minute after George Oyebode in the Teddington goal made an initial save from a Drew Burkin penalty corner, but couldn’t keep out the follow up shot from Jose Hurtado. So it was all square at half time.

Southgate came out after the interval with renewed purpose and although having the lion’s share of possession, it was one of those days where the ball refused to cross the line with both Giulio Ferrini and Teague Marcano seeing shots saved by Oyebode.

Heading into the fourth quarter, it felt like the match was going to be decided by a single goal, and although Southgate were on top, Teddington were still very much in the game. When Southgate won a penalty corner in the sixty second minute, maybe this was the opportunity to take the lead for the first time? But it was not to be as they squandered their ninth corner of the match.

Teddington then proceeded to the other end of the pitch and won a penalty corner of their own. Up stepped Jagdeep Gill to score his 250^th national league goal and restore their one goal lead.

Southgate responded by subbing off goalkeeper Sav to leave an empty goal in the hope that the extra man will help force the equaliser. The high risk strategy mis-fired as they were caught out by a 80 metre aerial which found Ed Greaves in the circle who then slotted the ball into the empty net. In the final minute, Teddington won another corner, and without a keeper, Gill found the back of the net for his second to make the final score 4-1 to the hosts. It was the first league defeat for Southgate, who were left to rue the missed opportunities. Coach Kwan Browne will be looking for a strong rebound as they host third placed Canterbury on Saturday in a crucial match for both sides.
