Mens 4s head up against top of the table Ham & West at Paddington Rec

Match Report : Ben Berndes-Cade

Result : LOSS 1-3

An important game for the 4s as they took on top of the table at Paddington Rec. A team with impressive conversion for goals but an even more solid defense. Build up to the game was clear and concise from the start, hit them hard and fast and try to slide a few goals past them early on and surprise them.

We were out of the gate as planned, strong pressing, had a lot of the ball and were working our way into the game. However, they hit back early, getting a short corner by exposing our left side, against the run of play. The corner injected and having beaten the first man, managed to lift it through Akshay’s right stick and nestled into the top left of the net.

Down but not out, we pressed on in the first half, passing through and having some great link up play through the right from Guy Garner, Andy Buckle and Joe Kelly.

We continued to harry and harass their back line, thanks to Kabir Bowry, Lik and Freddie Burns working tirelessly up front to give us chances of a break. Kabir managing to slip a ball through to Lik who had a chance of a shot, but was snuffed out by the defence.

The score remained 1-0 by half time.

We entered the seond half still hungry and aggressive for a goal to get us back in it. H&W fought back and had a fair share of possesion and endangered our D a handful of times. It was Southgate that struck first however.A great roll from Freddie Burns in H&W’s D saw us win a short corner for an obstruction. Deciding at the top from Lik to slip it left for a slap hit was all we needed to get back in it. Goal for Southgate as the unmarked Ben Berndes-Cade slapped through the legs of the well drilled H&W keeper as it clattered against the backboard. 1-1.

H&W were able to step up a gear, and were able to get a great link up on the right for a wonderful deflection across the D that beat Akshay and put H&W 2-1 up.

We never gave up and continued to press on, getting short corners that were kept clear of the H&W goal by some good saves from the keeper.
H&W had their own short corner however and the drag flick that was aimed for the bottom left corner was stolen from Akshay’s pads by the post man Ben Berndes-Cade as he picked the ball, but still found its way into the Southgate goal. 3-1

The game ended 3-1 but the fight and passion from Southgate always kept us in the game. A single goal and the game would be in our favour. A well fought battle from both teams with small mistakes costing Southgate goals.
