Southgate Flutes – the club’s Ladies’ Masters side – secured a stunning victory in their England Hockey O45s cup match on Sunday at home. As a team we outpaced a very sporting and friendly Chichester but were frustrated in our attempts to score. At least until Caroline motored through the defence of the south-coast outfit and converted with aplomb putting us 1-0 ahead in the second half. Chichester came back though – despite the general run of play – and after a deflection off Kathy’s shoulder at a short corner and in the ensuing melee in front of Helen in goal, they drew level. Try as we might the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle. And so to the penalty shootout! Mach, Jo W, Theresa, Kim and Caroline (and there were others also brave enough but we only needed 5) volunteered and we collectively held our breath. What the oppo might not have known was that we had Helen ‘Hinch’ Argyrou in our goal – two flicks saved and we won the shoot out
January 14th Match reports;
Our Ladies 2s lost 3-0 against Top of their table Chiswick L1s whilst our L3s put a point on the board after having a thoroughly enjoyable game, drawing 1-1 against Chiswick L2s. Despite many near misses for both teams in the L3s game, they had the majority of possession and played hockey with fire so the score doesn’t reflect the hockey played. Our goal came from Lowri after being fired in from a short. MoM votes were spread throughout the team, but after having a stormer in midfield, Charlotte Kelly won their votes. Our L4s got to work early that Saturday morning clearing the pitch from snow and frost before they played. All hands to the pump! Although the L4s lost 2-0 and had a struggle in the 1st half they came back fighting in the 2nd half where there was a big improvement on the 1st. Ella Sherring was Woman of the Week again for the L4s with her inspired play at left mid. Finally our L5s lost 3-2… BUT with no goalie and no subs in defence it was a pretty well fought match and score where everyone worked very hard as a team.
