Triumphant 4s are the first ever winners of London Women’s League Div 4NW. Beating Richmond 0-4 at the Quintin Hogg Memorial Ground on Saturday sealed the championship for the squad, coached by Magda Charalambous, with one game still to play.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the win and so proud of the team,” said captain Kathy Hammond. “We’re grateful not just to Magda but also to our Wednesday coaches Lewis and Harry as well as the 3s and 5s who have been so supportive in a season when player availability has been tight. It really has been a club effort.”
This sentiment was echoed by co-chair of selectors Kim Bishop-Laggett. “This is a super achievement and fantastic for the women’s section.”
Saturday’s game was won thanks in part to some tremendous bacon-saving goal-keeping by Elise Taylor, dogged defence from Woman of the Week Sum Sze Tam and four goals from four different scorers; Olive James, Helena score-at-will Weblin, Amba Parmar and Ella Chandler. But most of all to team resilience, encouragement and determination.
“Having so many different players with the poise to finish in the D has made us hard to beat,” said Kathy. “But so has our can-do attitude and absolute commitment to working hard for each other on and off the ball. ”
Another factor has been the tactical decision-making and being the only team in the league to move to a lateral 4-4-2 formation in a heartbeat to confound all opposition in north-west London. You can see 4s in their season finale at home on April 9 at 1.30pm on Pitch 2. Or catch them next season in Div 3N 😉 (Captions) Final whistle – CHAMPIONS!
