Southgate made the trip to Ipswich for a rare Sunday fixture on 27th October and came home with all three points.
The team put immediate pressure on the Ipswich defence as they strung together a number of strong attacking phases. It wasn’t long before a penalty corner was awarded. Katie Hopkisson stepped up to repeat her match-winning goal against the same opposition last season. Thanks to a precision insert and trap, Katie took hold of the ball and ripped a drag flick straight into the back of the net.
Southgate was not ready to ease up and five minutes later they were ready for goal number two. A slick piece of play from capatain Lucy Thayer landed the ball on the end of Ella Sherring’s stick at the top of the circle. Ella used her skill to shake off two defenders and put the ball towards goal. A deflection touch from Carla Johl at the stroke spot gave the ball some air before a final finish from Emily Ruffell-Hazell saw it past the keeper and into the net.
Southgate, wasted no time getting back into action in the second half attacking down the right-hand side through Hatty Wilcock. After delivering a ball down the line, the new signing to Southgate this season continued her run from right back to receive the ball back at the top of the circle. Hatty then smoothly duped the goalie to slot one inside the right post and earn her first national league goal.
Final score 3-0 and with all three points, Southgate eased into second in the table. Emily and Hatty took home Player of the Match honours.
Next fixture: Bromley & Beckenham at home on 9th November.
