Last weekend saw L1s make the journey south of the Thames to Bromley & Beckenham, only for a win to elude them.
The game started brightly when after some slick skills through the midfield, the ball was slipped through to Ella Sherring on the baseline. The first shot was saved but fell to recent signing Elisa Filarmonico who sent it past the keeper, into the goal in minute two.
Despite some brilliant defence by Bobbie Burkin, the final minute of the first quarter saw a lucky chance fall to a B&B striker to convert so that the teams went into the first break all square.
As the game moved into the second quarter, the home team capitalised on a brief lapse in Southgate concentration and took the lead. Not for long though, as four minutes later after a fantastic phase of attacking play from the ‘Gate strikers, resulted in an attacking short corner. Milly Powers rattled the backboard with a perfectly placed sweep from top D. 2-2 at half time.
Sadly the encounter proved to be a game of two halves as the final 35 minutes turned into some of the ugliest of the season. Cards came thick and fast adding frustration to both sides. A total of three yellows all within 10mins of each other saw Southgate down to 9 players.
Despite some well managed defence and plenty of goal-scoring opportunities, three unanswered goals from Brom & Beck meant the final score was 5-2.
Player of the match was Charlotte Burrows for determined carries down the wing and a hunter’s mentality in the press.
