Wapping 2s v Southgate 2s
Result 0-3
Goal scorers:
Emma Cox x2, Caitlin HC
On an early frosty March morning, the women’s 2s ventured to the frozen wasteland of East London (the home of hockey). Half the squad weren’t aware that there were two 8 o’clocks in the day!
Maddy was a doubt for the game after falling down an escalator, but soldiered on masterfully for the benefit of the team.
Southgate began the game at a high tempo, putting pressure on a side fighting for survival. They came close to opening the scoring when Maddy, now fully recovered from her disagreement with the escalator, managed to deflect the ball onto the post.
Eventually the continued pressure paid off when Emma reverse dinked the ball over the keeper, which then rolled over the line to put the mighty reds (although playing in white) 1-0 up. Southgate maintained the pressure but couldn’t extend their lead before the half time whistle.
The second half begin just as the sun was rising, and Southgate extended their lead with an Emma Cox deflection from a classic Hurley hit. Cox was so confident in her ability to score, she celebrated before the ball dribbled over the line.
Many chances went a begging; Em RH had one particular brilliant effort, having taken on the whole of the Wapping team before reaching back post when two defenders dived in front of the post making a goal line save – ‘with their sticks’.
Finally Southgate put the game to bed when Caitlin HC entered the D at the top right hand side and buried the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal. So surprised was Caitlin at scoring her first goal of the season, she celebrated by producing a tope suicida on the first person she saw.
I am currently writing this because of the votes secured. This was due to falling over dramatically, is if performing in a Whatley play – “Liv was told, following this thespian dive that she had to leave England Hockey’s theatre because she was in danger of winning an Oscar for her performance. Luckily, she survived the impact and Jennifer Lawrence’s job is safe”.
With three more points in the bag, a lovely lunch at Wahacas, a massive doughnut, and a positive goal difference the women’s 2s squad are looking forward to their next game against a strong Surbiton side.
