Roll of Honour

Southgate has a long and rich history spanning more than 125 years. Here you will find the names of past and present Southgate members who have won awards and honours, who have held posts and who have represented their country at hockey.

Dunlop Johnson Award

_

The award is the club’s highest honour, presented in memory of Jock Dunlop, a long serving member who made an outstanding contribution to the life of the club. In particular, during the hockey seasons of the late 1960s, he ran the bar at our former clubhouse in Waterfall Road almost single handed. His unstinting efforts were rewarded by his election as a Vice President. Jock died in the 1970s on his way to umpire a Southgate hockey match, and his funeral was one of the largest ever in hockey memory – attended by clubs from all over London and the home counties. At his wake, held in “his bar”, his family, friends and colleagues conceived the idea and then donated to the award.

Following Murray Johnson’s death in 2008, the committee decided to change the name to the Dunlop Johnson award. Murray became a member in 1938 and made a huge contribution to the club in the post war years. He was Secretary, Treasurer and President and, like Jock, when he stopped playing he umpired as seriously as he played. Jock and Murray were good friends and the backbone of the club for many years – jointly they were members for over 100 years.

The prestigious Dunlop Johnson award is presented each year to the Southgate member judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the club, both on and off the pitch.
