Magnums Battle Hard but Bromley & Beckenham Pull Away
Magnums 0–6 Bromley & Beckenham
Another bruising day at the office for the Magnums’ twelve, who travelled to South London to face a strong Bromley & Beckenham side.
We couldn’t have made a worse start, conceding an early short corner before we had a chance to settle into any sort of rhythm. However, we gradually worked our way back into the game, with the soon-to-be-reduced Graeme and Titans guest Laurence forming a useful axis in midfield. Patti and Randall also forced a number of penalty corners and got shots away, but unfortunately, we couldn’t find the back of the net.
Sadly, Graeme then suffered a serious hamstring/upper hip injury after being brought down by a trailing stick. The game was delayed while he was carried off, bringing on Ten-Minute Pom for a longer stint than he had anticipated! Half-time arrived with the Magnums trailing 2–0.
Giles and Martyn continued to work tirelessly, alongside Randall, while the back line of Cliff, Sarge, Trevor and Jonny rolled up their sleeves and did their best to stem the tide. Eventually, the pressure told, with some unfortunate marking allowing the opposition to stretch their lead with four further goals.
Man of the Match, as voted for by the opposition, went to Randall for his tireless running and, in their words, being “a bloody nuisance!” High praise indeed!
A special mention must also go to Jonny, who drove Graeme and his car to Watford A&E, and Martyn, who followed them up and drove Jonny back. That’s what being part of a team is all about.
Onwards to next week, when we take on Reading!
