Southgate’s Men and Women fell short against two strong Holcombe visiting sides on Saturday night.

In front of a packed crowd the Women took to the stage at 4pm as Ellie Robinson and her side looked to continue their form against a recently relegated side in Holcombe W1 who are now finding their feet under coach David Matthews.

Ronan Casella and his players had the better start and it was new Gate players Charlotte Stafford who put Southgate ahead in the 39th minute from a well worked corner routine but from that point it was the visitors who enjoyed the themselves with Leisa Randall scoring in the 47th minute from open play before Valentina Turienzo scored two in 7 minutes to give Holcombe a 2 goal cushion which they took with them all the way to the final whistle.

Southgate’s Men were looking to bounce back after a frustrating outing at Brooklands and hoped they could get one over against old coach Kwan Browne- despite some strong attacks, the home side held firm for the first quarter with Barney Bithell scoring a beautifully worked goal which was set up perfectly by James Hickson. Yet Holcombe charged back into the contest immediately with Tom Moorhouse scoring clinically and that was followed by two goals from former Southgate player Teague Marcano in the 2rd and 25th minutes. Those three goals in just 5 minutes firmly put Huw Stevens and his players on the back foot.

Another former Southgate player Alastair Douglas added salt into the wound with his first goal in the Premier Division in the 40th minute before Marcano completed his hat-trick in the 43rd minute and finally Mubasahr Ali put the nail in the Southgate coffin three minutes from time to give Holcombe a comfortable 1-6 win.

The statistics do show a tighter game – Southgate achieving 14 circle entries to Holcombe’s 9. Yet Holcombe also managed 7 shots from their 9 entries with Southgate achieving just 2. Holcombe won 8 corners and scored from 3 of them- Southgate won 2 PCs and didn’t score at all. Ultimately Holcombe took their chances. The Southgate players can rue some missed chances and had a chance to make the score -line more competitive and will need to do so as they prepare for a huge away game against Cardiff & Met on Saturday at Sophia Gardens.
